You are correct, Gunnar...the peak bloom season varies considerable from the
colder north to warm southern Kyshu. Mid June is the season for central
Honshu (Tokyo-Kyoto). If one were visiting Japan to see "hanashobu", the
Japanese name for these irises, one would normally want to go to where the
greatest gardens devoted to these irises are found...which is in central
Honshu.
The first time I ever saw Japanese irises was when I was visiting Japan on
vacation (I was working in Korea for the U.S. Government at the time). Later
when I was working in Japan, my wife and I visited Meiji Shrine Gardens (in
Tokyo), the most magnificent display of Japanese irises anywhere.
Interestingly, the irises are brought into the garden in large tubs in the
spring, and two streams are damed to form a large but shallow lake, into
which the tubs are set, slightly under water. They are then grown there
until their bloom is over...then removed. The lake has bridges across it and
a path along the sides. When you visit the garden there is a huge line that
you join, and then follow...you cannot stop for long, because that would
prevent the line behind you from getting to see the flowers. Hundreds of
thousands of people go through this garden every year...and it convinced me
that I wanted to grow Japanese irises when I had my own garden. And I do so!
