If southern blight is a fungus, would you expect it to do better in soils
with more organic matter?  Or is it just going to get energy from live iris?
 Do you know how these critters get a toe hold on the plant?  Does it require
some kind of injury or can they drill right into healthy tissue?  What kinds
of defense mechanisms do plants have against pathogens that breeders exploit
when developing disease resistant strains?  (you never should have admitted
to having studied plant pathology)
