Further comment on the washing/soaking, Comet cure for the rotten
blues: I get better results than even a Comet sprinkle with a very
strong bleach solution sprayed on the clean end of the rhizome. If I
don't have to dig the whole thing out to get the rot cut away, I also
spray the soil around the cut end. I know this adds some moisture,
but the Clorox (or whatever bleach you use) takes care of it. And
when I say "strong" solution, I mean as much as 1/3 to 1/2 bleach.
It's potent, but it doesn't harm the living plant or rhizome, and it
does kill the organisms causing the rot. If at all possible, I try
to cut out the bad stuff and leave the rhizome growing rather than
dig it out, though sometimes it is so bad by the time I discover the
problem that I have to dig.
