Re: TB's are worth it...

Ellen - if you're looking for rot just wait until spring! Actually
you may have less than we do here 1 or 2 zones south because you
probably have continuous snow cover for the winter. The worst times I
have had with rot have come after winters with little snow cover.
Those January ice storms are killers especially if the ground is
frozen and the iris are under water or ice for a while.

The gardens in central Maine (as opposed to those here in "Southern"
Maine) usually have continuous snow cover. They had one or two open
winters a few years ago and had Major Rot in the spring. One of our
MIS members discovered that a melon baller is just the thing for
scooping out rot.

Two or three years ago, I took everything out of the TB bed, amended
the soil, building it up higher for better drainage. I replanted,
then gave the TB's an ultimatum - "Perform or else! Do you know how
many daylilies I could grow in this space?" This year I had my best
bloom yet - I think it was the good talking to that did the trick.

Ellen you really should get some SDB's amd MDB's for earlier bloom -
and they're SO much easier to grow than TB's.
