No problems, just situations.

We need access to tabulating equipment and something to format the
ballots so they can be read by the machine. We need someone with the
knowledge to program the ballot into the machine, and take the output
from the machine and pretty it up (although I've been working with
computers for more than 37 years, vote counters are one area I have
complete ignorance of). We need to find a scheme that is tolerant of
shaky hands likely to draw outside the lines or else the accuracy is
likely to decrease. (The punch-card ballots don't have this problem, but
make it difficult/impossible to change your mind.)

Personally, I agree that ET (electronic tabulation) is the wave of the
future, and I hope not the distant future. (At least until we can
require voting by email/webpage only  ;-)

There are just a bunch of things that need to be worked out first. 


Gerry, who certainly wouldn't mind seeing the hand tabulation process go
away, since it took quite a bit of time, but who wants to be sure the
replacement is better
