Hi all,
Like Dennis, I have been busy planting out my seedlings this week, one
planets width away, and in early spring. From just over 1000 seeds, I ended
up with 520 seedlings. I have planted out about 200 in the vegetable garden,
and as many in large (12" diameter) pots, 3 seedlings per pot. These are
nearly all IB's or SDB's.
This leaves me a few veg. garden beds to plant with - you guessed it -
vegetables!
My greatest excitement so far has been from a cross I did between LYRIQUE
(an IB from ZING ME) and LONDON LORD (a TB which was the only reasonable
iris with pollen at the time). I ended up with 13 seeds. After 'wintering
over' in the fridge, several of these seeds appeared to be full of fluid, so
I discarded them. The 8 remaining seeds were planted in a pot. Every other
cross put up plenty of seedlings, but nothing from this cross until one dull
day, a couple of weeks ago, one popped up just as if it had been sent to
cheer me up. I tucked the pot in a safe corner, where it couldn't be
maltreated by cats or dogs, and only checked it occassionally. That one
seedling now has 5 siblings, and I found one more healthy looking seed when
I transplanted them yesterday.
They will probably all have hideous flowers!
Cheers, Jan Clark
