Dennis:  Tell me about it!  Builders think that if they dump their debris 
away from the house, and cover it with 6" of top soil you'll never find it! 
 They don't understand that true gardeners will dig up at least 60% of 
their land for gardens.
I have 3 bog to boggy gardens, and I can tell you that I have at least 50% 
sand in all of them.  All the information I have obtained says 50% sand, 
and for LA's [your other flowers can handle it] you should also have a lot 
(50%} of peat/humus in there for the acidity factor.  Also with sand I have 
found that when mixed with humus, compost, or peat it will retain moisture 
with out becoming foul smelling.  If your low spot is pooling water make 
sure that chemicals from your yard are not staying in that area.
It's good to hear that you guys have other Iris interest besides TB's
