RE: OT: I'm still here (update)

In Lanham, MD, just outside the Eastern edge of the DC Beltway, we enjoyed
watching the rain blow sideways and the wheelbarrow fill with water from the
safety of the screenporch -- until the power went out at about 3 PM. It's
still out over a 10-square-mile area as I write; they expect to restore by
Sunday(!). So the freezer goodies went to my brother's house this morning on
my way to work. If I get back a couple fewer venison steaks than I dropped
off, that's still better than having 'em all thaw.
Life without power wasn't so rough; I guess we're better prepared for Y2K
than we thought. Being a historic reenactor, I keep lotsa candles, and the
gas stove worked fine once I lit the burner with a taper. I was worried
about the sump pump, but manually bailing out the well every five hours kept
the basement dry.
The storm was gone by about 7 PM, leaving a soft gray sky and cool air,
not even much flooding. Took a walk around the neighborhood to see how far
the power outage spread, and met lotsa neighbors (many I've never seen
before) also out assessing damage: much minor tree wrack - leaf clumps, dead
limbs and only a few live branches, no big ones down in my immediate area,
though I've heard other areas were harder hit. We got by lightly.
This ought to even the balance from the summer's drought; last weekend
when I dug and moved a big aucuba, the earth was dead dry a foot below the
surface, even after Dennis' dregs had swept through.
Glad everyone else is safe, too!
Lynn
