Now that I have sorted through and planted all the rhizomes, I just have to
gush about how much I love the Aril Society Plant Sale. :)
I renewed under the 3 yr. membership for the Society which entitled me to a
$12 discount on the Plant Sale. And I also took advantage of the deal
where you can mix & match certain cultivars at 5 for $10.
In the end I spent a mere $14 (which includes shipping) and got a whopping
16 rhizomes! I got 100% bonuses... all different stuff from what I
ordered... which is just thrilling! Irises for less than $1 apiece...
delivered to your door! That should be enough to convince people to join
ASI. :)
The drawbacks? Sure, to get the $12 coupon, you have to pay the 3 yr.
membership fee which is $28. But you'll also get 3 wonderful color
Yearbooks that rival the AIS bulletins... filled with photos & info on how
to grow arils and arilbreds. Lots of juicy articles written by the likes
of Sharon McAllister, Brian Mathew, Tom Tadfor Little, Francesca Thoolen,
Sam Norris, and lots of other famous type people......even an occasional
article written be me! Ha ha!
I should also mention that many of the irises listed in the Plant Sale are
not commercially available anywhere else... so you can get some really cool
stuff!
Another drawback is those pesky mislabelled irises. I've heard others
complain about this in the past. And I know I fell victim this year
because I got 3 rzs of "Werckmeister's Clone #2" and one of them is VERY
different looking than the other two (long stolons vs. clumpy increases).
So obviously something is mislabelled. But hey, that's okay with me! I
grow irises because of their beauty, not because of their names. I know
some of you get uptight about proper labels, especially to enter them in
shows, and that's fine!
But anyone contemplating growing arilbreds (or arils) should seriously
consider joining ASI. I joined for 1 yr. and that was all it took to get
me hooked. These exotic beauties will be the envy of everyone in your
neighborhood. And they are every bit as easy to grow as the regular
bearded irises (well, the quarterbreds & halfbreds are, anyway). Did I
mention there are dwarfs, median, Space Age, and reblooming arilbreds now
too? <g!>

I'm ASI Plant Sale Fan #1! Rah! Rah! Rah!
