Anisodontea hypomadarum

A friend has one of these cape mallows, which has just broken off about 10 inches from the base in a strong wind (typical of San Francisco summers, speaking of winds). Is this likely to sprout and regrow brom the break or below, or is this one of those short-lived things that should be replaced (ideal for its spot - sunny, windy, tight space, flowers all year here)?
