Hi folks -
I recently recalled a distant memory of a plant I grew many years ago in a
garden in the Central Valley. It was apparently Prunus glandulosa
'Sinensis', the double pink flowering almond. It was a small-medium
deciduous shrub that was relatively non-descript during most of the year,
but in early spring was clothed heavily with small, rounded, double pink
flowers - a very spectacular show. It was the easiest thing to grow,
requiring modestly fertile soil, sun, and occasional water during the dry
months. The other day I actually was close to the house in which I lived
during college, whose garden contained this plant, so I made a detour. But
it has since been renovated and the garden completely redone and this shrub
is no more. I see that Forestfarm (Williams, OR, USA) seems to carry it,
so I know I can get it again if I wish. It seems to be an old fashioned
plant, not common at all these days.
I was wondering if anyone out there knows or grows this plant and can
respond about it. It was quite some time ago that I knew it, and I was
relatively 'young' in my horticultural experience, so I'm wondering if my
memories can be trusted.
