Dianellas again

I mentioned a few days back that I was starting to search the web for more
info on these plants. I think I've bitten off rather more than I intended!
Just a couple of examples: the Plants Directory for North-east NSW tells me
that D.caerulea has no less than 7 varieties. Good grief - all different? Or
simply different in the eyes of the botanists? Neither had I ever heard of
D.congesta and D.crinoides. An interesting name that last one - does it bear
a similarity to crinums, as the name suggests (or suggests to me, at any
rate)?

But my best discovery so far is D.sandwicensis, a native of Hawai'i, where it
is known as Ukiuki. Interesting to note that many of these website references
discuss dianellas in terms of useful plants, for whatever purpose, whereas
here in li'l ole Europe we think of them, invariably, as ornamental plants
for garden and greenhouse.

Well, does anyone else know anything about Ukiuki? (another new fave name to
add to my list!).

(sadly, an Ukiuki-free zone)
