Re: Hell strips

Bill,
The Medeilland roses are used here a lot for medians and
boulevard plantings. Usually it is the pink one you see.
PetroCanada uses them as a standard planting at all their
gas stations with variegated dogwood (Cornus alba Siberica
Variegata) and they make an attractive mixture.

I bought a Medeilland rose many years ago before they
became popular. It is a 'wild' grower - puts on 3 or 4
feet a year on top of the woody structure which is 2-3
feet high. The plant habit is nothing like the
well-behaved mounds available today. It is a most
delightful single rose varying from pale pink to pink and
cream and streaked and blotched with deep rose to cherry
red. Each flower is unique and looks like it is made of
porcelain. It bears a nice crop of hips also.

That is what they are called in Palo Alto, California. If
you ever travel Middlefield Road and can drive slowly look
at the area between the curb and the sidewalk and you will
see an amazing collection of plants, many of which have
been mentioned in the past week. Thanks to all of you for
your suggestions as I will pass them along to the lady who
organized Middlefield Road. I'd like to know if anyone
thought my rose suggestion was worth following. If
CalTrans thinks it is good and it works you know it is
good. bill grant
