Hi Tim--
--I'm the culprit. Yes, I have read the book, and noted the Osler connection. Otherwise I'm afraid I didn't like it, finding it shallow and totally insensitive to the island and the people, and not hesitating to display blatant ignorance. As far as one can tell there was no effort to double check historical facts, Greek usage, etc. Her mother, who really loves the island would have written a much more accurate and sensitive book. --Speaking of Osler, "Country Life" is doing an article on my garden, and the writer said she will try and talk to Mirabel about the old years. Cali Doxiadis Still in NY Tim Longville wrote: I seem to remember someone on the list living (in or near) house on Corfu once owned by garden writer Mirabel Osler. Apologies for forgetting who! - but I thought that person, if still around, might be interested in Emma Tennant's new(-ish) book, A House in Corfu (pub last year), which is about life in the house her parents built in the 60s just along from the Osler house (the Os and Ts were friends, ET's mother being a keen gardener). The book isn't really about gardening, except v. incidentally, but is interesting about the changes in the island in the last 40 years. Tim |
