Squirrels

Are there any effective control measures for squirrels, that anyone is aware
of.
I have a veritable plague of them in my garden. Consume all my avo's & nuts.
Attack baby birds in their nests & tease my dogs to a degree of distraction
where they forget the pain levels associated with trampling on my plants.
They're European grey squirrels - an introduction by Cecil Rhodes &
considered a noxious pest. I have no qualms about poisoning them if needs
be, but I'd rather try to drive them off first.
