Title: Slightly OT: Botanists needed for Algodones Dune monit
Botanists are Needed!!!
Please forward this email to any botanists you may know who would be willing to participate in monitoring the Algodones Dunes from April 11 through 16, 2002. The problem is that the dunes (an extremely fragile habitat) may be opened to off-road activity, despite years of agreement between the Bureau of Land Management and environmental groups to protect the area. Thanks to our President, possible economic opportunity seems to outweigh protection of rare, fragile habitats. This request needs urgent support! Please forward to anyone who can help.
Please contact Susan Hobbs if you can participate!

I have been hired by CNPS,
the money for the monitoring is being supplied from the BLM (John
Willoughby) given to CNPS to organize & run the monitoring.. I am in need
of botanists. I have plenty of enthusiastic people, with no botany knowledge
or experience. Susan Hobbs

Algodones Dunes Rare Plant Monitoring
This is our fifth year for the annual monitoring by the Bureau of Land
Management (BLM) and California Native Plant Society (CNPS). Salary is
$16.00 / hour, 10 hours /day, per diem is $30 / day. Lodging will be
reimbursed at $60/night (Government rate plus tax at Brawley Inn is $62.64 /
night) . Mileage won't be reimbursed this year due to the budget. The
dates of the monitoring will be April 11 (Thursday) to April 16 (Tuesday).
Four person teams will be walking the dunes, over peaks and ridges of loose
sand. The transects range from 4 to 11.5 miles. Participants should be in
good physical health as temperatures may register anywhere from 65 to 100
degrees Fahrenheit. Long pants and a loose, long-sleeved shirt, hat, boots,
sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, windbreaker, daypack with lunch, 1
gallon/day water if hot days, and compass (if you have one) are recommended.
Long pants in conjunction with high topped boots or ski gaiters are helpful
to prevent sand from getting into your boots, and a bandana and old ski
goggles are helpful if the wind blows. Gatorade or other drinks to
replenish electrolytes should be carried. Familiarity with GPS, compass, and
availability of a 4 wheel drive vehicle are helpful. Please RSVP to this
E-mail as soon as possible if you are interested or have additional
questions. If you can tell me how many days you want to work, which dates,
and leave me an E-mail address and phone number & time when it is convenient
to call you, it would be greatly appreciated.
