Melianthus disasterous

A few months back I wrote asking if there was any reason not to allow my Melianthus major to grow as tall as it would go. Today, I found that reason.

I had reduced the Melianthus to three tall branches which had reached the eaves and were in gloroius bloom. Today, we have had a very unusual heavy April rainstorm (it never rains in April in So California) and in the rain, my lovely melianthus branches have fallen over from the weight of the water.

Fortuately, the new growth had developed faster than I could control it, so there is new growth coming up and the plant is not a goner. But, I will know now, that I should try to limit it to about 6' tall.
