Here are my experiences in the same climate than Gill but perhaps
milder in winter (-3°C this year) :
- Miscanthus transmorrisonensis ; no water in summer it's OK
- Miscanthus sinensis 'Kleine Silberspinne': no water in summer : OK
but for me too invasive, I mean growing too big for the situation, no
seedlings at all and very beautiful almost in winter
- Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus': is watered in summer but it
should not be, I'm sure the interesting flowering season would last
longer if not watered
- Miscanthus sinensis 'Emmanuel Lepage': Very nice but growing too
big for my garden, the only one which is evergreen in winter
- Leymus arenarius : OK without watering but invasive, very invasive !
- Briza media 'Limouzi' : watered once a week in summer : nice
interesting seedheads from late may to september
- Bouteloua gracilis : no water for him but perhaps I should move it
to another bed which is watered because it is so tiny and keep the
same size than it was when I planted it, very disapointing
- pennisetums are OK for me
