Re: Ornamental grasses

After years of gardening in Corfu I can honestly say that I've never been tempted to grow ornamental grasses. I think the main reason is having had to cope with the local wild grasses which go from lush green carpets to wind-dishevelled messes to fire hazards all within the period of a month and a half. In mid June they need to be strimmed to the ground for fire safety reasons. Of course within a cared-for garden context with regular watering they would last longer, but they'd still be prey to the summer winds which would, quite apart from rendering them less ornamental, scatter their seed far and wide creating fire hazards in unirrigated areas. As you can see, I'm not very enthusiastic about the idea. It's not a "mediterranean" solution.

Subject: Ornamental grasses

Just wondered whether anyone has had success growing ornamental grasses (not grass for lawns) in Corfu, or other similar area, that can withstand hot summers and very wet winters. I aim to have some in a gravel garden.
Many thanks
Janet
