Re: Using Roger's Red

Hi Karrie,
We have several Vitis 'Roger's Red' growing on a large pergola.  Although handsome, I've found them to be slow, only beginning to cover the pergola 5 years after planting.  They can do with little irrigation, but grow much faster with regular water.

They are messy; lots of little grapes drop for at least a month or two in late summer.  We've remedied this situation by stapling shade-cloth to the undersides of the pergola beams, simultaneously supplementing the rather spotty shade and blocking the dropping grapes.

As for maintenance, they're not too bad: I've done one winter pruning in five years, and occasional trimming and training in summer.

Overall, I'd recommend another vine, maybe Parthenocissus virginiana for fall color, or Rosa banksia, Rosa Climbing Cecile Brunner, Distictis, Hardenbergia, or Pandorea for summer shade.  (Stay away from Wisteria, though, it can be a maintenance monster!)

Hope that helps!

Hi Karrie,

We have a ‘Roger’s Red’ on a 4’ high fence along the back property line in hot San Jose.  It is at least 30 feet wide with moderate trimming.  I would expect a very large arbor might accommodate it or you will be spending a lot of time pruning it.

Cheers,

Bracey

I know we have discussed it in the past, but I don’t have time to search the archives.  Does anyone have experiences either good or bad about using Roger’s Red on an arbor.  Any considerations about messiness, maintenance, etc. are appreciated.
