What is Mediterranean

I believe that many people have an inexact idea of what Mediterranean
climates really are.

My idea of a Mediterrean plant would be one that likes winter moisture,
summer dry.  Everyone agree??

In Australia our idea of Californian climate is very little frost but it
seems from friends that California can have quite a bit of frost.    Is
Californian climate and Mediterranean the same???  

 It is quite amazing that lots of people feel they can't spell plant names
but can spell Mediterranean!  Obviously comes from practise!
