Gosh as i read this thread i keep getting more examples to tell you. Anyhow it is true that the coastal zone of californias north coast has much more humidity in summer than say Salinas which is in a wide valley. Anyhow The Monterey Pine would never be able to grow in Monterey if we did not have the summer fog. The trees collect the moisture from the air and it drips like rain into the soil ( im not sure but ive heard they can take moisture into their needles.....dubious claim i suspect) watering the trees. If it were hot and sunny in the summer the coastal mountains would be covered only in buckeye and live oak, it would be much to dry for them to survive. Same with the coast redwoods which generally in the south county grow in canyons and rarely inhabit the tops of the mountains. It is the fog playing a role here that keeps them alive and keeps big sur and the Santa lucia mountains blanketed in redwoods and pines. im done! BJ
