getting rid of lawn

 Has anyone had success with a method other than hand digging?  Last summer
we rented a supposed labor-saving device, a desodder, then planted clover
densely, but the grass came through.  Has anyone tried the black plastic
method?  Do you think it would work to cover it from now until next spring
or would it take summers?
