I live in the northeast USA and one thing that kills a lawn rather
quickly is a pile of hardwood leaves allowed to sit all winter. By
spring, all traces of grass will have dissapeared (dissolved!) beneith the
pile. I suppose it is the tannic acid in the leaves, since this is how the
forest fights the prairie (the prairie fights the forest with brush fire).
Oak leaves work especially well. Under black plastic, this is ought to
doom the sod very quickly. If leaves are not available, try shredded
bark.
