I grew up in S. Texas, where these things are rampant. I do not know what
conditions they love most, but I most often run across them sitting in
caliche (limestone clay).
Climate in S. Texas is very mild winters with some rain, occasional freezes,
and very hot, dry summers from april-june (~95-105 degrees F), and slightly
less hot and considerably more humid summers from july-september (~90-100
degrees F). It hit the 90s (F) this year in February in San Antonio, and is
back in the 90s now, which is much more normal. Annual rainfall is around 25
inches. They are native to brushland. Don't water!
