Interesting gardens in France and Germany

I am looking for suggestions of interesting gardens to visit in France
and Germany.
The travel guides are very good on giving info on museums, architecture
and
places to eat.  However, I've discovered they are quite weak on gardens. 
So I
asked about this on the Gardens listserv.  Apparently no one on Gardens
knows
of any gardens there as there have been no responses.   So I am hoping
that
people on this list might know of some to suggest.

The area I am focusing on is the southwest quarter of Germany and the
northeast
quarter of France though suggestions for anywhere would be great.   I
like most
types of gardens, so if they include plants other than mediterranean
that's fine
as well.  And if you found a great place to eat nearby, I'd love to hear
about that, too.
