I'd like to thank everyone who gave me some suggestions about 
ancient plants several weeks ago.  

The display ended up as 7 columns, each with a bonsaii-like planting,
starting with a lichen-covered boulder and ending with an eco-sphere (a
sealed glass ball with a self-sustaining ecosystem of shrimp and algae).
