I am mostly puzzled by its history prior to 1500.
It was written up by Discoredies as an excellent wound herb in 100AD.
Why wasen't it used more often?
It is a very efective wound and bacteriocide
Pops up in 1633 in Gerard.
(Leyel says introduced to Britain late 1600 obviously not true)
It had heaps of pagan associations before being given the christainised name
yet which pagans used it.
I also came accross a one line reference to smoking the flowers.
why would you want to?
Was it used as as a religio/shamanic herb?
druid Celtic?
Is there a plant historico/archiology group on the web?
Thanks for your help
