It's not you.  I am not sure what the deal is with Akebia, but some seem
to have little or no scent while others are quite fragrant.  Time of day
doesn't seem to affect it.  I had smelled many of them and found no scent
at all; then in Georgia, a friend pointed out one and said "Oh, those
smell so nice..."  I was about to say "but I never noticed any scent on
them" but sniffed first and *wow*, it was fragrant.  The flowers on that
one were pale, not the dark purple-brown colored ones.  I know there is
more than one species and wonder if this is part of it, or just varieties
out there that nobody has bothered to classify?
