Re: Local v International

I tend (just about; in the long term) to agree with t'other
'foreigners' that Medit-Plants' great strength as it is at the moment
is the breadth of (place of origin, plant interests) of its membership
- and that lots of restrictedly 'local' messages would lead to lots of
skipping-&-leaving.. Local groups are a grand idea and I wish anyone
well who's setting one up (wish someone would set one up for the north
of the UK!) - but a 'geographical' group of that sort is perhaps kept
best kept (more or less) separate from a 'specific interest' group.

I say 'Just about; in the long term,' 'perhaps' and 'more or less'
'cos the inquisitive and curious part of me would (in an ideal world;
given unlimited time) very much enjoy reading more about the
nittygrittiness of the everyday gardening lives of folks - and what's
on offer to them - in very different, very specific parts of the
world. Trouble is, it isn't an ideal world and I can foresee that the
probable sheer volume of such messages would soon have me thinking,
'Oh-ho, I just don't have time for this,' and waving a fond farewell.
Which is a bit sad. But a realistic assessment, I think.

But I certainly wouldn't want anyone to feel inhibited about slipping
in a occasional quick message about something interesting coming up in
their local area which other members there might just not have come
across. And to prove that I mean what I say, here is one: the Northern
Group of the UK Australasian Plant Society is having a meeting at Ann
Fox's garden in Cheshire on 30 May; there'll be plants to swap (and
perhaps seed as well) and the usual obsessive plant-nut conversations.
Ann is an addict of NZ celmisias and has dozens of rare spp growing
and thriving in her garden. If anyone wants more details, mail me
direct and I'll let you have them.

Trying to be 'efficient,' not to put down anyone's efforts.
