Re: A hedge by the sea (Indian Hawthorn, Raphiolepis indica)

I love Indian Hawthorn. It's pretty common here, yes, but it's one of
those plants you just don't get sick of (at least I don't). One came with
the house. It's unpruned so has turned into a beautiful rounded mound-like
shape, about 4' high and equally wide and deep. You can shear them but
they aren't as pretty that way and it lessens some of the bloom.

I am wondering, however, why mine doesn't seem to bloom. I know it must
bloom because it gets berries every year but I seem to be missing it. I've
been here 2 years next month. I've seen the bloom on it, I believe it's
pink, but it's sparse and short-lived (sparser than the berries would
indicate).

So do I simply have a variety without the usual spectacular several-week
bloom, or am I treating it poorly? Other Indian Hawthorns in our area do
bloom quite well. It gets no direct water although a year ago we planted
vegetables to one side of it, and an artichoke to another, and they get
water (this seems to have made no difference). We don't fertilize either,
although aforementioned bed gets plenty of compost and organic mulch.
