This Kurrajong business is becoming really involved! I don't know
the Asteratrichion discolor, but it does seem strange if it is known as >
Currajong (considering that it sounds like a native name and the languages in
Tasmania and around Sydney would have been entirely distinct). Any comment on
that, Gay or someone who knows Tassie flora?
The Kurrajong which grows over a wide area from Victoria up to Queensland (including a short distance from
our family's N.S.W. farm) is Brachychiton populneum. This is a serious weed in
W.A. as Rod will know. The Bottle Tree (which has an uncanny resemblance to
the other Bottle Tree, the Adansonia or Boab, and yes I know that in Africa
that is Baobab) is Brachychiton rupestris and the glorious Flame Tree is
Brachychiton acerifolium according to my book. There is another Brachychiton
(growing in the Harold Boas Gardens, Rob) which is quite spectacular when in
bloom, but I have forgotten the name which a gardener told me. It does not
seem to be as widely grown as the others, at least anywhere I have been.
The bird is called Currawong, not Currajong. Lots of people get confused.
Understandably!
