Re: Rhododendrons for dry areas?

Dear Nan

There a quite a few 19th C hybrids of Rhodo. ponticum that are pretty
tolerant of dry-ish conditions, SAPPHO is one of the best and one
which is locally called CAERULEA SEMI-PLENA, there are others too -
all in the lilac, purple, wine red colour range plus a few with
marked throats such as SAPPHO and SOUVENIR DE CHEVALIER ? I am not
too familiar with this last one, our neighbour has one on our
unwatered boundary where it manages to clasj brilliantly with my
carefully colour harmonised grouping.
