It is interesting to hear your comments about the content of Pacific
Horticulture - many here in the Bay Area have thought that in years past it
concentrated too much on garden and gardening more appropriate to the
Pacific Northwest! ;-)
This publication, being a benefit of membership for these various west
coast horticultural groups is indeed intended to reflect horticulture in
those areas. But it is also available as a periodical and has many
subscribers far outside of the Pacific coast. In many ways, as you state,
it is perhaps more closely following that charge, under the new editor,
Dick Turner. Dick is also a member of the Mediterranean Garden Society,
and feels strongly about presenting information that considers our unique
climatic conditions. This includes your more southern expression as well
as the northern 'mediterranean' climate they have in Oregon &
Washington! While the articles in an specific issue will of course not be
completely representative of the huge breadth sought by the editor, I think
the content of the magazine has improved in the manner that is more closely
aligned with it. Dick, a friend of mine, is always on the lookout for
interesting article ideas and would love to hear from authors.
I've know more than one international subscriber to this magazine who likes
to impress their gardening friends (and enemies?) but 'casually' leaving
copies on their parlor tables for all to see. Its reputation certainly
goes beyond our local societies and climates!
