One thing I do know about this plant (which I have seen around but never
grown myself) is that it is a stupenduously vigorous grower and I should
think confining its roots in a planter would be a good thing as it might
tame it a bit.

My book of climbers says
"frequent pruning may be required to stop the vine becoming too large
but must not be done after late spring as flowering wood will be
sacrificed. The plant becomes quite woody with age and it may be
necessary to cut back with secataurs or loppers to rejuvenate it".

I don't know where the idea came from that it has tendrils as it is
definitely  a scrambler.
