For bee lovers, I highly recommend the last chapter of John Muir's book The Mountains of California, titled The Bee-Pastures. John Muir apparently loved bees as much as he hated sheep, and his detailed and adoring descriptions of the plants that could sustain bee culture throughout the state are really moving, especially given the contrast of the way California is now compared to what he was observing a century ago.
