Re: Fwd: Romneya coulteri propagation

Gill  --  I have an area of Romneya and constantly have to cut out the underground runners that would spread it further.  I should have put in a barrier around the first planting to keep it from spreading, as advised...   The first plants were from short sections of roots (roughly a foot long) with growth nodes... a half-dozen placed under bark mulch in a sunny location at mid-winter, almost all of which set and developed into flowering plants very quickly.  I have given sections of runners to neighbors who report that theirs have rooted just as easily.  My garden is in Marin County, in a marine-influenced climate just across the Golden Gate from San Franciso, with winter rain but normally above-freezing temperatures and moderately-warm rainless summers.  During the summer, the native Romneya go completely dry and dormant.  Anni's comments for seed are excellent, but if you have an existing healthy plant and only want a few more that grow quickly, I would suggest taking root cuttings during the fall/winter when they normally come out of dormancy.  Great plants, wonderful flowers!              Larry

Hello Gil
The old tricks with heat or a gasoline soak have never worked for me. However, a soak in 500 ppm gibberelic acid works nicely. The recommended cold period does not seem essential either ? I just sowed some of the seeds in our warm greenhouse and they are germinating.
It can be difficult to get them from the tiny seedling stage and into a pot. I initially used a very coarse fast-draining mix that seemed to kill most of them.Other propagators have told me that their seedlings succumbed to damping off. This year I used a peat/perlite mix and placed the seedlings in bright shade. The response was amazing: very little damping off and fast growth.
Best wishes,

Does anyone have any tips on propagating Romneya coulteri?  Mine doesn't set seed and I've had no success with bought seed, even after trying various heat treatments.  Have had some limited success with root cuttings, but only limited!  Any ideas appreciated!
