Wild-type Lupinus polyphyllus

Does this plant go dormant in summer?  I've never actually noticed in the wild.  I now have (had?) a large specimen in a pot. Cut it back after flowering, repotted it after new growth, but now it has shrunk down to 2 leaves which repeatedly resprout and die back.  Is it trying to go dormant and is my watering interfering?  Any advice appreciated.
