Grevillea

Though they are not easy to find at all nurseries hereabouts, they are excellent plants that need a wider audience. Grevilleas are not eaten by deer or gophers. You do not water them in summertime. YOu must be careful about the kind of fertiliser you use. They will grow in almost any soil. They bloom (at least here on the coast) from November to April, when much of the garden has no blooms - and some grevilleas seem to bloom all year.
There are groundcover varieties, small shrubs, and tall ones (my 'Moonlight' has just started throwing out big buds). They do not have any diseases. No pests. In short, they are the easiest plants to grow. They will tolerate some frost. Established ones survived a week of freezing weather in 1990.The University of California at Santa Cruz Arboretum has introduced scores of species and hybrids in the past 25 years. We are having our big, annual plant said in October - and people come from all over the state to buy. The Arboretum has a website - and will list the plants to be sold. Bill Grant
