Related to Nan's comments, a couple of Grevilleas that
always generate interest in my own garden include a
couple of the more tender hybrids such as G. 'Robyn
Gordon', which is an almost everblooming deep red and
very showy in bloom, and G. 'Superb' which is a softer
orange version and also fabulous in bloom. I am
always trying to find out if 'Superb' is available
from wholesale growers, as the supply seems to be very
sporadic for this variety. Does anyone know of
sources for this? I seem to recall that it is also
known by another cultivar name, but don't recall what
that is...
Nan, by the way, belated congrats on a very nice
article on your garden in the most recent issue of
Pacific Horticulture Magazine. It looks to be well
worth a visit...
I would second Bill Grant's recommendation of taking
in the UCSC October sale, but don't know that I can
faithfully make the same claims for general hardiness
for many Grevilleas away from the coast's influence.
As I recall, the December 1990 freeze here in the SF
Bay Area killed major amounts of older Grevilleas in
local gardens, and many were also lost at local
wholesale growers such as Monterey Bay Nursery,
Rosendales and also Suncrest. It appeared to me that
UCSC came through relatively intact in the Grevillea
department, while losing many mature Leucospermums and
Cape Heathers. I generally only feel safe using most
Grevilleas in Sunset zones 16 and 17, or where it
generally never gets below 25F on a regular basis. I
sure wish there was a good available database for
Grevilleas species that are hardy to 20~25F temps...
Anyone know of a good one on-line that could be
bookmarked for future reference?
