Re: Isoplexus sceptrum

Does anyone on this forum have experience growing this
species? I have several seedling grown plants
received from Annie Hayes at Annie's Annuals that I am
growing on to see how they perform here compared to
related I. canariensis and I. isabelliana, both of
which grow quite easily here along the coast. I had
admired this plant from afar for years, and it seems
to be more often grown in England than here in
California. Coming from Madeira, and with larger
softer leaves, I am assuming that it may also prefer
less hot/dry conditions, being endemic to Laurel
forests at 500-800m elevations. Is this
fog-belt/cloudforest conditions in Madeira? Anyone
know how long a seedling might take to reach blooming
size, and do the flowers live up to the lush size as
photographed in the gardens of Tresco Abbey, Isles of
Scilly, in the Phillips/Rix book, Indoor and
Greenhouse Plants? As it appears to get fairly wide,
I don't even know if I will have room for it in my own
garden...

If anyone can relate their experience with this plant
in their own garden, or as seen in habitat, I would be
most interested to receive feedback...
