The three volume (Timber) book on grevilleas (I recommended it
to the RHS for an award and was given a big yawn "As we don't grow them" which
tells you something about their international image).
Peter Olde and Neil Marriott have written the definitive work
on grevilleas. But detailed info on their frost-hardiness is spotty at
best.
We learned a lot at UCSC about freezes - those Aussie plants
that were not in any shade were hit hardest as when the sun came out, the plants
literally exploded when the temperature went up. Those in the shade survived.
Moral here somewhere.
There are Aussie native plant websites on the topic (I haven't
looked in a while). They have trouble with them on the east coast of Oz - and
many are grafted. But their native habitats are almost all in warm zones
(exception the Snowy Mts. and Mt. Kosiosko).
Neil has the national collection of endangered grevilleas. If
any you ever get over there (north of Melbourne) you will levitate when you see
the ones that would be gorgeous in any garden - the color range, the leaves,
etc. I must goose the staff at UCSC to bring in more varieties. I grow over 60
varieties.
