Re: substitute for salvia darcyi?

Funny, mine darci doesn't smell at all. I just pruned it back this week and didn't notice anything.

Oh well... how about S. regla 'Huntington?' Its a bit taller and the leaves are more grassy green but it does fine in my mid 20s garden and has great red flowers.

If you can handle a giant, try S. gesneriflora. Mine gets at least 8' tall and spreads as wide but the leaves are almost chartreuse and the flowers are red red red. Some varieties have black bracts - I think 'Mole Poblano' is one of them and the combination of black/red/ chartreuse is really striking! But you have to have enough room.

Hi all,

I was hoping that some of you on this list
might be able to offer some suggestions for
plants that are similar in appearance and
    habit to salvia darcyi?

I love its generous bloom, loose form, and
the combination of light apple-green foliage
with the exuberant red flowers, but the smell
is just so offensive (especially given how
much time I spend deadheading it) that I'm
ready to yank it, which will leave a big
hole that needs to be filled. Anyone have
any favourite red-flowered salvias of similar
form? Where I garden, it regularly dips to
the mid-20's (F) in winter, so the replacement
has to be somewhat hardy (so s. confertifolia
    is out).

Thanks in advance,
