This is for those of you who will be
attending the garden tour in Berkeley/Oakland on Sept. 10.
I have a wonderful specimen of Ruellia
brittoniana that my brother gave me in a little pot from his plant about 6 years
ago. It is now a lovely shrub 5 ft. tall and wide that flowers
continuously all summer and until frost with the most wonderful purple
flowers. It is sometimes called invasive and aggressive, but I have had it
in a sunny location that receives only weekly watering unless temperatures rise
above 95 (then I water that bed every 4 days), and it has kept itself nicely to
its spot. It is just now putting out side runners past where I want it to
go, and I thought to share it with anyone coming to that tour that might be
interested. It has been pest free and disease free for me. It
is pinched by hard frost, and early in the spring I cut it back
to about 18 inches to 2 feet tall, and it just comes in full and beautiful
then. I am offering it because it isn't available where I garden; though
some of you may have it in your local nurseries, I've never seen it
here. I don't know where my brother got it!
If anyone is interested they can respond
directly to me. There are probably 10-12 well-rooted side shoots at the
moment.
Happy Gardening,
