I grew one in Red Bluff, California (zone 8): heavy clay soil, no protection. Neither the person who gave it to me, nor I, knew what it was at the time. It did just fine but I don't suppose it got as much rain (or cold?) as you have in Corvallis. Hummingbirds love it.

I just purchased one too. I'm guessing that with sharp drainage on a south facing slope it will survive here in Oregon. I will need to protect it from the copious rains here over the winter though I imagine. Mine will be planted under a covered walkway.

Just purchased a one gallon Hesperaloe parviflora - have never grown this one - any pointers?
an internet picture showed red flowers - I might go back and get several and put them in a group.
