Re: Shrub Ideas?

Hi,

I have been using Artemesia 'Powis Castle' to fill in till I can decide on other plants.  Planted here from a 3 inch pot it covers 4x4 feet in one year and 8x8 feet in two years.  I am really happy with the coverage.  Supposedly it is not very long lived - but if you need quick coverage, this is a great plant that needs very little water and no care.

I also use Pelargoniums - scented geraniums - 'Attar of Rose'  and 'Skeleton Rose Scented'.  They cover about 2 x 2 foot square in one year and 5 x 5 in two years - grown from 3 inch pots.

This is the first time I have grown Westringia fruticosa which was covered with tiny white flowers from February to about May and I highly recommend this shrub.  I grew it from a one gallon and it is about 3x3 foot square now 1.5 years later and only about 2 foot high.  Doesn't spread but makes a nice compact spray type shrub.

I also have Little Ollie dwarf olive - has only gotten 2.5 feet around - but will eventually get about 4 - 6 feet supposedly - makes a nice compact shrub - has a very neat appearance.

Abelia x grandiflora 'Edward Goucher' has arching stems and grown here from one gallon is now about 3 x 3 and 2.5 feet high - semi evergreen.

A low growing variety I am not growing but have seen planted near parking areas in the Bay Area are ground cover type pyracantha - they have a lot of interest many times of the year - flowers, berries and evergreen.

Leucophyllum frutescens or Texas Ranger didn't look good in winter but in summer it makes up for it  - may grow too tall for what you want - grown from one gallon, mine are about 4 feet tall this second year and blooming profusely.

What about Hypericum calycinum, Cotoneaster dammeri, Cistus, Sarcococa (for shade), or there are some nice junipers and also grasses - I like Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Carl Foerster' and Miscanthus sinensis variegatus.  I don't use low growing rosemary only the upright - but that might be a good choice.

Linda
