Standard soil mix for cymbidium orchids or cactus/succulent mix can work well, but many of the bromeliads I use go straight into unamended clay soil and do perfectly fine.  For more sensitive bromeliads, I usually mix 1/3 perlite with 1/3 orchid bark with 1/3 horticultural pumice, and then amend this 50/50 with the native soil.
