Re: Growing proteas


Check your soil.  Needs to be Acidic (generally) and defficient in
Phosphrus. The addition of P can even be toxic, Likewise adjusting soil via
lime to free P can be a problem.  Here in Hawaii they are grown in
weathered alluminium/Iron Oxide soils, (very defficient in P and acid )
your typical Pineapple soils because few other plants will grow on it.
The Black Acacia should not be a problem (they are weeds on Maui were
Protea are commercially grown) maybe able to help with nitrogen fixation,
but I am sur the roots will fight it out and the protea may loose (it has
shallow roots and never a good system)...
