clippable natives

Special thanks to Susan G. for her suggested Ausie natives for clipping.
Oh yes, I've been eyeing my westringia lately, with my hedge shears in
my hand> What do you think of a low dome shape? It's 2 ft. high and
about 5 ft. across now. How hard can it be cut? Should I have started
when very young, or can I do it this fall?

Leptospermum species, Grevilleas and Pittosporum undulatum (here called
"Victorian Box"!) are all grown here. NOBODY cuts them, let alone shear
them! We all just stand around wringing our hands, while they grow all
wild and wooly. I think many Southern Cal. gardeners are afraid to cut
anything until it's too late and they've grown 40 ft. (Pittosporum
undulatum). It's too bad, because after all, this is just one of the
things the "Mow-and-Blows" do best.

My friend has fabulous dark 8 ft.hedges sheared from Dodonea viscosa
'Purpurea' that guide visitors from garden room to garden room. In
another area, she has grown and sheared Myrica californica (Pacific Wax
Myrtle). She has been able to create a formal design using all
Mediterranean climate plants. Yet still Southern Californians seem to
ask designers for "an English garden"!
