Lechenaultia formosa

Hi Richard -

Your name came up the other day when I was visiting Digging Dog nursery in
Albion (on the west coast of Calif, just south of Mendocino). Deborah
showed me a group of wonderful Salvias you had sent them to trial - she was
quite excited!

With regard to Lechenaultia formosa, here is some botanical info:
http://www.environment.gov.au/life/species/flora/vol_35/lechen-formosa.html

Perhaps some more cultural information from Monterey Bay Nursery
(http://montereybaynsy.com/):
"Lechenaultia formosa, red form -- RED LECHENAULTIA -- brilliant crimson to
fiery orange red flowers appear on a tight, low, circular mat of
needle-like foliage to 3" tall by a foot or less across. Stunning when in
full bloom. This species tends to be stoloniferous, and you know it is
happy when you see new sprouts arising from below the ground close to the
main stalk. It is a little easier to raise than the above species. Similar
cultural requirements. Also excellent in containers. Western Australia. UC
Santa Cruz."
They also list Lechenaultia biloba, with wonderful gentian blue flowers.

I have seen some pages on the web where they list this species (among
various others) as a source for 'flower essenses', for what purpose I am
not sure.

Sounds like a great plant for our mediterranean climate! I will need to
trial this and other Lechenaultia species in a garden soon!
